Return to Nz ArchitectureUnited World College
2008
Design of United World College to be placed in Central Otago, New Zealand. The project utilises genetic algorithms as a design process while addressing the inherent modernist bias of the brief. The genetic algorithms used the computer to rapidly evolve buildings in response to the site. At the time the client had 43 proposed sites and this method allowed them to delay site selection until after the algorithm had been produced. When it came time to choose a site, the algorithm was able to evolve designs for all sites. Site selection could be based on the site that gave the best design rather than had the most potential to produce the best design.
